Serving the Traditional Latin Mass

Serving at the altar is a privilege that calls for attention, preparation, and reverence. The server assists the priest in the ceremonies of the Traditional Latin Mass and learns to place his actions at the service of the sacred liturgy. Training concerns both the outward movements of the rite and the interior disposition with which they are performed.

The Guild of Saint Stephen

The SSPX describes the Archconfraternity of Saint Stephen as a guild for the instruction and sanctification of altar servers. Its aims include learning the rubrics and understanding the meaning of the ceremonies. Its rule emphasizes punctuality, reverence in the sanctuary, silence in the sacristy, and short prayers of preparation and thanksgiving.

Beginning your training

Before serving, ask the parish about current training and who is responsible for instruction. Learn the responses, positions, and movements under that person's direction. A written guide can help with study, but it does not replace practice or the priest's instructions.

Learning the ceremonies

Use our explanation of High Mass to become familiar with the order of the liturgy, and consult the Mass texts for the day's readings. Attention to the prayers helps a server understand why the ceremonies deserve careful execution.
